Mt. Diablo Rock Garden

A microcosmic re-creation of the Mount Diablo experience, this garden was designed to honor the close proximity to the 20 million-year-old mountain range. The mountain’s patterns of geologic features and their corresponding plant communities are reflected in the garden design. At the highest and most expansive viewpoint of the garden, a triangular stone rests on a promontory pointing to the Diablo summit. An existing curvilinear path off of the deck was reoriented to direct views to the mountain. Existing dry pebble beds were expanded to sinuously traverse the garden as if flowing through the Diablo foothills. A hillside woodland trail offers views of the creek below, with benches for observation of Mount Diablo’s watershed and wildlife.
